"UMUT Open Lab - Museum City of Architectural Models" Exhibition

University Museum, The University of Tokyo
Finished
The University Museum at the University of Tokyo has held public exhibitions over the last 70 years in a symbolic effort to return specimens and samples of scholarship accumulated within the institution to society. In addition to this basic collection and preservation function of the museum, it is also taking on the future-oriented mission of "creative rebirth". To this end, the museum has been holding public workshop-style exhibitions called "UMUT Open Lab," obtaining new results in educational research at the university in the form of new museum resources. The aim is to make these educational and creative processes public and accessible while mounting dynamic, constructive exhibitions. The exhibition hall functions as a place for appreciating the results of this program, as well as site for conducting research, the pursuit of creative activities and the exchange of ideas. The Open Lab is uniquely positioned to showcase the newest developments related to the museum's next-generation experiments.

The theme of Open Lab is architecture. Through a collective display of numerous architectural models, visitors can get an overview of the diverse forms and formats that architecture can take. The models are broadly divided into three kinds: models of modern and contemporary art museums since the Louvre; models of famous architectural works from ancient times to the present in both Japan and abroad; and models of proposed buildings with a future orientation. A total of over 150 models are planned for the exhibition, most of which have been created by students at Tokyo University.
