Maurice de Vlaminck
Commemorating the 50th year after the passing of Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), Gallery Tamanaga holds his retrospective exhibition.
Vlaminck was born in the family of musicians in 1876 in Paris, and became one of the significant Fauvists along with Matisse and Derain in early 20th century France. He made a living as a violinist in an orchestra, and also as a bicycle racer, but ever since he met Derain in 1900 at the age of 24, he began to pursue his career as a painter. His use of vivid primary colors was a starting point in Fauvism. Yet between 1908 and 1914, he abandoned his vivid colors and began experimenting with solid forms and composition, under the influence of Cezanne. In the late 1920s, he mixed black in his colors to create an original world which carried a sense of darkness and intensity. His work is a reflection of his character -- intense, yet down to earth with a love of nature. Throughout his career, he maintained his anti-academic attitude as a painter, and became an influential figure for Western-style painters in Japan such as Katsuzo Satomi and Yuzo Saeki.
This retrospective exhibition presents about 30 paintings by Vlaminck.
