Solid, beautiful finish of Edo joinery. Through a complex process of putting "tenons" together in an intricate assembly, Shimazaki joined traditional joinery technique to his personal artisanal touch and sense of modernity, investing his woodwork with a noble quality. The exhibition space is a western-style residence built in the early Showa period, and provides the unique backdrop for a display of about 20 pieces, mostly of joinery work. This is not only an opportunity to appreciate the exquisite workmanship of these pieces, but also to take in the uniquely serene spirit of this living space that complements Shimazaki's own craft seamlessly, with its minute attention to the natural warmth of wood, its tactile qualities, and its materiality.
