Mitsuhiko Imamori "Satoyama"
This event has ended.
At Daimaru Museum Tokyo
Media: Photography, Art Talk
Satoyama is a peaceful region enveloped by snow in the winter, dogtooth violets that announce the approach of spring, the blossoming of purple azaleas after the winter, blessed with distinct seasons and the emotions and landscapes, paddy fields and flora and fauna that accompany it. Its landscape holds a special sense of nostalgic longing and sentimental ache for the Japanese, a kind of idyllic proto-landscape for the heart and mind. This space, where paddy fields and copses of trees, streams, man and beast coexist, is not in fact a particularly unique location. Prior to Japan's period of rapid economic growth, this sort of landscape was a familiar sight, everywhere to be found.
Photographer Mitsuhiko Imamori works from a studio looking over Lake Biwa, where he has photographed the plants and animals that flourish in Satoyama, on the banks of the lake, and the way in which humans live in harmony with them.
This exhibition documents the "drama of life" found in Satoyama as observed by Imamori, showcased in over 150 photographs.
