Artists

Katsumi Watanabe
Photographer Katsumi Watanabe passed away on January 29th, 2006, leaving thousands of photographs that he had taken, mostly in the shadows of Shinjuku. This artist left his hometown in Iwate prefecture after graduating high school to pursue photography, and quickly became attracted to an edgier part of society than the Tojo Kaikan to which he belonged for 5 years. Tokyo was in the midst of rapid physical and economic development, and the city's energy was especially tangible at night in Shinjuku where Watanabe took many of his works. His numerous portraits of the characters of Shinjuku - tattooed yakuza, prostitutes posing happily - and many others, express a timeless message.
