"Denjiro Okochi and Daisuke Ito: In Celebration of the 110th Anniversary of their Birth" Screening

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
Commemorating the 110th anniversary of the births of master directors Daisuke Ito (1898-1981) and star actor of period films Denjiro Okochi (1898-1962), this program will survey their achievements through several extant films. Ito was instrumental in establishing the "jidaigeki eiga" (period film) genre, a stylistic leap and departure from the traditional "kyugeki" (old theater) films, venturing new narrative approaches and modes of expression that are uniquely cinematic. Okochi is perhaps best known for his extremely popular role as Tangesazen. The partnership between the two men was often praised as a perfect combination.
Between October 21st and 25th, silent films accompanied by live music will be screened. Also, on October 26th, still images from the lost film "Ooka Masadan" will be on view in slide format, accompanied by narration and piano music, in commemoration of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
