Masaru Eguchi "Gift"
This event has ended.
Masaru Eguchi participated in a three-person exhibition at Punctum in January this year. This up-and-coming young artist will present the culmination of "Gift", the series he has been working on vigorously since last year. For this series, Eguchi has produced monochrome prints on which acrylic paints were applied (Some works were digitally finished).
Born in 1982, Eguchi graduated from Tokyo College of Photography this spring. While he had been taking monochrome photographs since entering the college, one day he was shocked to realize the mountain of misprints he had accumulated. Not being able to throw them away, he decided to keep them and finally came up with the way to save them: He began applying acrylic paints on these misprints.
In the process of trial and error, Eguchi comes to realize a specific kind of beauty that only misprints (= "something lacking beauty") have. Such a realization made him perceive himself as not a "painter" but a "man who photo/ graph (light/ depict)". Instead of creating something from a bare canvas, he breathed new life into once "dead" misprints by rendering colors of light upon them. By doing so, he was literally "gifted" an art form of his own.
13 works in various sizes will be on display.
