This is the 22nd edition of the exhibition series entitled "The Second Stage at GG", as well as the 16th year that the Hitsubo Exhibition, started in 1992 to support the work of young artists, is being held. Those who have been selected to show at this exhibition, whether or not they eventually won the Grand Prix, have since gone on to much important work in a variety of fields. This series of exhibitions was started to share the work of these young graduates of the Hitotsubo Exhibition.
The artist for this 22nd edition is New York-based Kanako Sasaki. Her series of performative self-portraits that graft imaginary narrative elements onto reality won prizes at the 23rd Hitotsubo Exhibition in 2004. Since then, she has made work in London, Vienna, Budapest, Bolivia and others, while continuing to exhibit widely.
On display at this exhibition are portraits of women that Sasaki met in the course of her daily life and spent time with together. In these intimate depictions of private lives, Sasaki displays a profound empathy for each of the women's lifestyles, highlighting the delicacy and complexity of these individuals, as well as reflecting a personal side of herself within the images.
