White clouds and deep, black darkness. Both black and white seem to be perfectly natural and obvious colors, but when one thinks about it neither pure black nor pure white are hues that occur much in nature.
If all colors were removed from our daily visual world, reduced merely to degrees of light and dark, what would the two remaining contrasting colors be?
The appeal of works composed only of white and black consists in the placement of these two opposite hues, playing to their contrast and balance. How do black lines get drawn and hemmed in by the white space? How is the black placed in the picture and what shape does it take on? Through a consideration of these questions, tracing the black lines and planes with one's eye, the fascination of Takako Masaki's work becomes apparent. Also, in combining two photographs, the positioning of these two four-sided works against each other produces another distinct placement that takes into account balance, producing a certain "ma" (space) on the wall thanks to the configuration of the separate elements and enhancing each of their individual qualities. Chiharu Inoue's monochrome photographs have less of the feel of looking at photographed plants than the skillful arrangement of the black background silhouettes.
