Andre Derain (1880-1954) is known as a master of modern French painting. Together with Vlaminck and Matisse, Derain pioneered the Fauvist style of painting from 1905 onwards, attempting to reform a style of painting that took photorealistic representation as its model through their avant-garde activities. Derain's contribution to advancing a non-realistic style is highly appraised even today. Although known as a Fauvist, Derain came increasingly to admire the classics, such as Poussin, from the 1930s onwards, shifting gradually to a more classical style of painting, as well as undertaking commissions to design costumes for Russian ballet stages, developing his artistic activities in a number of different and broader directions. In addition, Derain also started creating woodblock print illustrations in 1943 for Renaissance author Francois Rabelais's "Pantagruel", sprucing up Rabelais's fantastic world with multi-color single block prints that recalled playing cards and tarot designs. In addition to around 30 woodblock prints by Derain, lithographs for Rabelais's "Gargantua" are also on display. Finally, in conjunction with all these works, selected new acquisitions will also be on view.
