Kei Tsuji
Kei Tsuji has been conducting fieldwork and creating installations in Australian deserts, Canadian forests and island waterfronts in Scotland using self-dyed yarn and cloth since the 1970s. His colorful installations of red, yellow blue and white yarn seem to flow and seep through the remote locations and vast natural settings they are placed in, prompting comparisons to European and American Earthwork and Land artists, but Tsuji in fact reflects a unique sensibility that invokes a certain fear and dread inherent to the Japanese conception of nature, traits which his international reputation has been founded upon.

Tsuji approaches dyeing and weaving as a reflection of the personality of the artist, as a natural supplement and complement to nature. Twisted, decolored and transformed by weathering, he acknowledges dyeing as a metaphor for existence, and further becomes aware of himself as a part of that natural world. Such are the notions that inform and inspire Tsuji's work.

This exhibition features the installation "Aka", which was created from the melted snow in gushing swamps in Mt. Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture on August 23rd-24th 2008. A video work will be projected onto two large basins installed in the center of the gallery that replicate the swamp, along with photographs displayed on the 32m walls. Tsuji's "Aka" evokes a silent communion with nature that exists elsewhere on Earth, a vivid landscape of the unknown.
