The abundant nature, rich cultural traditions, painful history and problematic political conditions of Okinawa have all served as motivations for the creative activities of artists of diverse origins. This show examines the relationship between Okinawa's locality and its modes of visual expression from the Meiji period (1868-1912) through to the present. More than 100 exhibits including paintings, prints, crafts, photographs and films will present various images of Okinawa, raising acute questions pertaining to contemporary politics, society and culture.
