Artists

Katsunori Mizuno
Katsunori Mizuno's monotone videos of landscapes feature seven scenes. A waterfall, a mountaintop occupied by dead trees, a valley covered in clouds, a seashore with wedded rocks, a scene reminiscent of Miyajima Island, and sand dunes projected onto an oblong screen.

Without moving his camera or adding effects, Mizuno creates video works that resemble still images. His creative process is simple: he first visits his chosen sites and documents what he sees in front of him: the subtle drama created by nature. In doing so, he reveals scenes that are easily overlooked.

In "Gray Scale," the beauty of this work's monotonous harmony stands out, appearing like a powerful painting of soothing black, pearly white and iridescent gray. The projected image portrays a mysterious and whimsical landscape, revealing the sublime found in the natural world.

Mizuno just completed his graduate studies in 2008, but already he has received much recognition and been awarded prizes, making him an artist to watch in the future.
