Excerpt from Shinichi Arai's comment on this exhibition:
"The eight East Asian artists featured in this event have been working with social, economic, political and gender issues through performance art. For the average person in Japan, the idea of politics makes some people feel uncomfortable when the discussion takes the form of art. They don't mind hearing politicians or journalists commenting on these issues on TV or in a newspaper article, but when these issues are broached in the context of art, something prevents them from being engaged. Keeping in mind this sort of response, I'm put in mind of the time when the poet Takuboku Ishikawa wrote 'The Stagnation of the Times' while other writers remained 'speechless' at the time of the Great Treason Affair (government suppression of socialists) during the Meiji period. I'd like to remind you that contained within 'performance art' is also the notion of 'survival art.'"
