Hisashi Narita
After completing graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999, Hisashi Narita (b. 1970) began exhibiting his work widely at various exhibitions. In addition to his activities as an artist, Narita also works as a company employee at Shiseido, handling art direction for its Maquillage and Ma Cherie products and putting his manifold talents to good use.

Narita works mostly with installation, focusing on textile works. His installations are typically created in warm colors, giving audiences a cute and fuzzy impression at first glance. In fact, however, each of the spaces that he creates is made up of a surprising quantity of handiwork. To imagine that this massive amount of manual labor comes entirely from the hands of one artist is to quickly relegate the initial impression of "cuteness" to the wings: what is involved here is perhaps actually a form of obstinate madness. The opposite concepts of "cuteness" and "madness" seem to both inhabit the space of the work simultaneously, an enigmatic paradox that seems to be connected to Narita's own duality of roles as contemporary artist and Shiseido art director.

For this exhibition, Narita has put the two-storey wooden building of Art Center Ongoing to use by converting the entire gallery into an installation modeled after his own bedroom.

Talk events also scheduled. See website for details.
