The Forbidden City in Beijing was for over 500 years the symbol of China's splendor and even looked upon as something like the center of the universe. Up until the Qing dynasty ended in 1911, it was also the emperor's residence for more than 24 generations, the seat of government and the largest palace in the world. At the time, entry was denied to commoners, and until recently, the City was shrouded in a veil of mystery.
Then, in 1900, the palace was photographed in detail by Kazuma Ogawa, perhaps best known for his photograph of Natsume Soseki printed on the thousand-yen note. These vintage Ogawa prints will be displayed alongside photographs of the Forbidden City by Hou Yuanchao as it stands today.
