These sculptural forms in white clay have had their insides gouged out, arranged erect and upright like Go boards, with crater-like shapes seeming to fly out of those vacant intervals. With their fluid, dignified sense of geometrical form and sharply carved contours, these organic compositions have gaping mouths that seem to be about to spit something forth at any time. Some of these works also seem to have stalactites sprouting forth from their inner cavities. These massive cuboids have the oppressive feeling of heaven and earth about them that is yet tempered by the grainy conical shapes that grow within them, evoking in the viewer a premonition of momentary collapse.
Adachi has been creating such work for almost 10 years. Working with white clay blocks measuring 1 meter cube, he furrows away persistently, making dense lines to whittle away at and carve out his creation. Although he got his start in oil painting, Adachi soon became fascinated by the expressive possibilities of earth and stone and started making ceramics. However, he soon realized that sculptural works in general, no matter how rich a medium of expression, are essentially engineered artifacts that have departed from the condition of clay itself. Thereafter, he worked with cuboid forms that could not be found in nature. The countless nicks and gashes that make up the carved qualities in his work are a visible trace of the time and effort devoted to the creation of the sculpture. In his new works, only the surface bears the trace of this authorial effort, and organic forms are nowhere to be seen.
