Takeshi Fujimura's new work, "With a Light, Across the Water," is an installation composed of photos and texts. Though each photo can be seen as a part of a sequence of scenes, each also looks like an autonomous scene onto itself. The images in the photos are left as they are in a sort of ambiguous state, combined simply with the other photos and texts. His work appears as if it is about to be constructed into a story. But conversely, it can be seen as coming to a halt just one step before the story ends. A sense of insecurity pervades the work, one that stop just short of finishing the story.
Similar to his previous work, "Being in Right Places," this work features images of the artist's family members, his acquaintances and friends, as well as the artist himself. The story continues to revolve around those people by maintaining a certain distance from them. He does not make advances toward the creation of a story; rather, he rejects the processes by which his work would devolve into a definitive narrative. His work may also put viewers in mind of Aristotle's criticism of the 'deus ex machina' being used to resolve or complete a story. Fujimura's images, hovering on the brink of finishing a potential narrative, speak a story from and unto themselves.
