Rinko Kawauchi
April 28, 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the first "Nikkei" immigrants to Brazil, who left from the port city of Kobe. Rinko Kawauchi's "Semear" photo collection, released in 2007, was produced over a two year period, during which she made a total of 3 trips to Brazil to document the Japanese "Nikkei" community in Brazil, as well as the natural scenery, the lifestyle, and the sense of vitality that pervades the Brazilian carnavals. This exhibition later made its way to the Sao Paolo Museum of Modern Art. Kawauchi captures beautiful and sometimes nostalgic, an uniquely Brazilian sense of energy.
This solo exhibition is Kawauchi's first in Tokyo in 4 years.
