“SVA Subway Posters: A Half Century of Iconic Graphic Design” will be on view from April 6-13, with an opening reception on Monday, April 7, 6-8pm, at the Monkey Gallery, 12-8 Sarugaku-cho, 2nd floor, Daikanyama, Shibuya-ku.
This exhibition includes more than 40 posters, all of which have at one time appeared on the platforms of the New York City subway system. From their earliest editions in the 1950s to the present, the posters have been designed by distinguished illustrators and designers such as Paul Davis, Milton Glaser, Marvin Mattleson, Kevin O’Callaghan, Tony Palladino, Stefan Sagmeister, Paula Scher, George Tscherny, James Victore and Robert Weaver, all members of the faculty and all under the creative direction of SVA’s founder Silas H. Rhodes. Intended as an advertising and recruiting vehicle for the College, the dynamic posters are displayed within New York City’s subway system, through which millions of people travel every day. The posters have succeeded in producing a groundswell of inquiries and applications and have also found international popularity due to their extraordinary graphic quality and inventiveness.
