Toru Kamiya
Toru Kamiya was born in 1969. After graduating from the oil painting department at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, he studied abroad in Dublin on a scholarship from the Irish government, and then spent a further two years there as an artist-in-residence.
In recent years, Kamiya has had his works installed in office buildings, schools and train stations, and has undertaken several public art projects. He has won critical acclaim for works that appear to blend into their surroundings, while at the same time demonstrating a quiet and noble presence.

Kamiya's work includes oil paintings with concrete, figurative images, as well as painting series based on rich gradations of color with delicate linework in acrylic applied onto the canvas. For both these types of work, Kamiya captures casual scenes and situations from everyday life in photographs, which are then used to create paintings that attempt to materialize the atmosphere and impression inherent to the place where the scenes were shot, all the while being extremely attentive to color and light. In fact, a strong characteristic of Kamiya's paintings is their reflection of the artist's internal emotional landscape, evoking a particular scene or spectacle made visible in the world.

As the title of this exhibition suggests, the subject of these works is the bodily and visual sensations that are reflected in these images.

These new works were created using oil paint on patterned wallpaper. In transferring essentially two-dimensional worlds onto the flat space of the canvas, Kamiya evokes a faint sense of unease and incredulity in the viewer. In the acrylic series, too, the patterns in the cloth that he uses as well as the diorama landscapes he takes as his motifs constitute not so much a work to be appreciated as a unique object hung on a wall, bur rather a work that demands to be grappled with at close quarters, taking it into one's hand and appreciating the weave and pattern of the cloth.

"Closer" features works that are comparatively small for Kamiya, leading to a sense of a somewhat minimal interlocking between each work in the installation. The entire space of the exhibition thereby expresses unification between the series and the space in which it has been installed.
