Hagi, in the Choshu region, produced many notable figures such like Shinsaku Takasugi who laid the foundations of modern Japan. During the final days of the Edo period, the Hagi glass industry flourished. The production of Hagi glass was started in 1860 by the scientist Jihei Nakashima, who advocated its necessity in the interest of scientific advancement for a modernizing Japan. Although mostly experimental equipment such as beakers were produced at the beginning, Hagi glass later came to be highly appreciated for its value as craft. However, an accidental fire and the death of Nakashima brought an end to only 6 years of Hagi glass production.
142 years later, Hagi glass was rediscovered by a native of the area - the scientist Kotaro Fujita, who has also been active as a designer of satellite ceramic parts. Thanks to Fujita's efforts, Hagi glass has evolved into an exemplary instance of immaculate craftwork, whose notable characteristics include its incomparable strength and natural pale-green color of quartz basalt.
On display at A246 Gallery are several Hagi glass pieces, including a reproduction of the "decahedral kiriko glass" that Takasugi treasured.
