VOCA 2008

Ueno Royal Museum
Finished
The VOCA exhibition started in 1994, and this is the 15th exhibition. VOCA takes the recommendations of museum curators, journalists and researchers from all over the country to select painters who are under 40 years old, and exhibit new work that they have made for the exhibition. Every year leads to a new discovery of emerging artists.

Works by 36 artists are being displayed in this year's exhibition. Among these artists, a 5 person panel has selected one artist as the VOCA prize winner, two for honorable mentions, and two for having produced notable pieces of work. Prizes have also been awarded to each of these people from the Ohara Museum of Art and Fuchu Art Museum.

The genres of works are diverse encompassing painting, print and film, as are the media that included pigment, dye, pencil and others. VOCA strives to explore the possibilities in the work of upcoming painters and other artists working in 2D media, and it allows visitors to see the state of contemporary and how it reflects the individual concerns of the artists who make it.
