This exhibition features works by nihonga artist Akira Ito (1940-), who creates monochrome painting using sumi and charcoal.
Ito was born in Noshinomiya City in Hyogo Prefecture, and currently resides in Hadano City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Right after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1963, he was selected to be in the group exhibition organized by Shin-seisaku-kyokai. He became a member of the group in 1972, and in 1974, he joined an art group called Soga-kai as a core member. Continuing in the 80s and 90s, he actively participated in various art groups and held exhibitions.
In this exhibition, various styles of work that Ito created during his school years up until the late 80s are presented in order to introduce his early exploration and development of monochromatic expressions, and also his keen interest in things in flux.
Ito says that he was influenced by the French painter Odilon Redon, especially the beauty of black in his prints. This retrospective exhibition showcases a total of 40 works including Ito's early works as well as his recent works.
