"UMUT A La Carte" Exhibition

University Museum, The University of Tokyo
Finished
The immense natural history collection has a sense of limitless romance to it, encompassing the entirety of natural things that exist on Earth. Even if researchers were to spend a lifetime going about their fieldwork, some of these specimens will not come their way again if they miss some stray chance lasting just an instant. The science collection is made up of just this sort of accumulation of objects, each originating from a unique, one-off encounter. The University Museum of the University of Tokyo has been conserving and collecting the fruits of this spirit of curiosity and exploration since the university's founding. Whether the object in question is bone, mineral or plant, the spirit driving each is identical. These beautiful, rare and sometimes unknown specimens and the way the university has gone about collecting them is itself a sort of narrative of scholarly history.

This exhibition showcases "a la carte" in the exhibition space several groups of unique natural history specimens, demonstrating the breadth and diversity of the natural world and the traditions of scholarship.
