Shan State in Burma was the first place which suffered from the AIDS pandemic.
As his shooting sites, Shin picked Kengtung district, the center of the eastern Shan, and Tachileik district, which has a border with Northern part of Thailand. Connected by a motorway, a lot of people of Kengtung have headed to northern Thailand as migrant workers, forming a so-called "risk groups" in venues for daily workers and prostitutes.
The infection struck people in northern Thailand in an explosive rate between the late 1980s and 1990s. Kengtung-Tachileik street ended up transferring not only people, supplies and trading materials but a copious amount of virus. According to an ex-driver, all of his 50 associates died in the mid-1990s.
Now Kengtung is facing its 3rd AIDS crisis. The disease has spread across the border, from the infected to his/her partner, a mother to a child, one tribe to another.
This exhibition gives viewers an opportunity to contemplate on the adversity these people have been through on the individual level.
