Artists

Naoki Shimoyama, Yuki Yanagisawa
This exhibition aims to introduce emerging artists who are associated with Gunma Prefecture. This is the 5th of its series, showcasing works by two male artists who create an expressive world where imagination and reality coexist.

Naoki Shimoyama was born in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, in 1972. Upon a close look at his realistic animals, one would notice compelling transformations. For instance, a ship-like leaf is connected to a foot of an African wild dog, and the tail of a gold fish is depicted as a part of a flower. These imaginative creatures are a permanent element in his work, visualized in a state of evolution. He carves these mysterious animal forms out of wood, and by coloring them carefully, he achieves a surreal effect.

Yuki Yanagisawa was born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture in 1962. In depictions of toys or a parent and child walking through a park, his fascination lies in the shadows. Simplified lines and colors are intentionally chosen to achieve this goal. At the same time, the skillfully controlled use of light and shadow create an invigorating atmosphere and a sense of warmth.
