Tokyo Wonder Site has been putting great effort into the continuous support of young artists, in affiliation with the Tokyo Government-hosted "Tokyo Wonder Wall" (launched in 2000), and as part of a global network of galleries and other cultural facilities. For each installment of this "TEAM" (Tokyo wonder site emerging artists on mezzanine) series, we have been selecting talented, up-and-coming artists and other creators who distinguished themselves in exhibitions at TWS Hongo, to exhibit their works at TWS Shibuya. "Mezzanine" in the title reflects our wish to provide through these exhibitions the artists with an intermediate platform from where they can hopefully leap to the next, international level.
For this exhibition we selected Teppei Kaneuji and Hiraku Suzuki who have been attracting attention in recent years. They will stay at TWS Aoyama: Creator-in-Residence in this winter and will create new installation work for this exhibition.
Teppei Kaneuji has been producing artworks aiming to fluidize the time and space of the everyday by reassembling items of daily use into bodiless phenomena, sensations, memories and images of various scales. His previous works include a series of three-dimensional sceneries of drums and chains covered with white resin and arranged to resemble limestone caves, and maps redesigned by cutting out parts from blank maps and pasting the lines together to form newly shaped geographic areas. In this exhibition, titled "Ghost In the City Lights", the artist attempts to combine his previous series to imitate the compound scenery of a city.
Hiraku Suzuki has been working in an almost "excavating" kind of style, extracting different images from a variety of places through the drawing process. The artist mostly find the materials for his work on streets. "Bacteria Sign" is a series of mock fossils made by embedding dry leaves arranged on panels in mud, so that the leaves' veins leave fossil-like imprints when the mud dries and solidifies. Suzuki's display at this exhibition consists of about 30 of these bacteria signs in a form of a relief-like installation. Also shown is a new piece made out of pieces of asphalt taken from actual streets, as well as videos showcasing the "Genga" series of intersecting line drawings. A visit to the peculiar space formed by these artworks will be like an expedition into a "new cave" that accommodates a variety of yet-to-be named objects and shapes the artists have unearthed in the middle of the city.
