Kaii Higashiyama
This is a retrospective exhibition on landscape artist Kaii Higashiyama, born in 1908. He established a unique style characterized by planarity and simplicity as can be seen in his representative work "path," after graduating from Tokyo Art University, studying in Germany and showing in the Bunten exhibition. He continued on to leave a deep impression in the postwar Nihon-ga field through works such as the partition paintings at Toshodaiji Temple Mieido Hall that are clear and understandable yet deeply spiritual. His works emerged from his most intimate emotions and a thorough contemplation of nature, and followed the times at the same time as being rooted in Japanese tradition. This exhibition features approximately 100 representative works and 53 sketches and studies presented in seven parts for an in-depth study of this artist lifework.
