Ritsuko Yamashita has in recent years taken part in several exhibitions, including VOCA 2007 and BankART Studio NYK/Kobe Art Village Center's "Dialogue with the City" (2007). She creates unique monochrome compositions using white pigments uniformly applied onto canvases, using a special sort of needle to carve motifs onto their surface. At first glance, her paintings appear to be woodblock prints, but these are not in fact transferred images, but rather the product of direct handiwork with a strong, forthright visual effect. Yamashita presents the viewer with an unique world made out of landscapes and people taken from real experiences and memories, actual personal anecdotes expanded upon and assembled in visual form on these canvases. Her worldview and techniques are equally present and intertwined in these works, leaving viewers with a somewhat jumbled sense of the scenes delineated in the paintings. This is Yamashita's first solo exhibition in 2 years.
