Tomoko Konoike "Hidden Mountain and The Lodge"

Tomoko Konoike
This exhibition, held over the 2nd and 5th floors of Mizuma Gallery, has the structure and progression of a mountain expedition, posing the possibility of accident and encounters with natural phenomena...some measure of courage and strength may be necessary to lay this world open. Visitors to the exhibition will first encounter sliding door paintings, and then be invited to imagine the world that lies beyond what is actually drawn on the doors, beyond this world closed in on itself. This potentiality lying just at the edge of the work arouses the audience's desire to peer beyond it, to embark on a certain adventure of discovery and disclosure, eliciting both fear and delight from the audience. Tomoike herself has up until now not said much about her own work, hoping that audiences will apprehend some of her motivations through these new paintings and installations.
