On view at this 6th installment of this year's TWS-Emerging are 3 solo exhibitions: "The Stranger" by Chihiro Nagashima, "Mixing In" by Masae Ito and "Fairy/ Sleeping Place" by Kanako Nishimura.
"When the ordinary events that we see and hear on a daily basis accumulate, certain core information emerges from within, gets sublimated, and eventually expands into a universal vision," says Nagashima. What she depicts on her canvas is "a nobody in nowhere," a stranger who resides by him or herself alone in a chaotic land, where ordinary places, times, meanings and thoughts all get mixed together.
With vibrant colors scattered on her picture surfaces, Ito's landscapes speak of her own experiences and feelings. Her own memories and thoughts seem to gush forth from her pictorial world.
With her keen interest in indigenous culture and the sense of vitality found in somewhat esoteric phenomena, Nishimura has produced miniature paintings depicting family altars and plants. On view at this exhibition are works capturing a certain animistic sensibility present in the landscape of her hometown.
