Akiko Endo
Born in Nakano-ku, Tokyo, Akiko Endo graduated from Musashino Art University's Junior College of Art and Design in 1968, and set up her studio in Sagamihara City. She began her life deeply exposed to and inspired by birds, rabbits, and all the natural living things of the forest, which resulted in the series "Paradise." In 1975, the sudden death of her first child sadly marked a turning point in her life, which thereafter influenced her work. She began the "City" series, tackling issues related to society and human beings. She was awarded the Takeshi Hayashi prize at the Showa-kai Exhibition in 1978, and in 1986, the Yasui Award. In the same year, she received sponsorship from the Agency for Cultural Affairs to travel to India. Examining human existence itself, she began creating large-scale paintings. She has held a number of exhibitions at major museums, presenting her masterpieces.
This retrospective exhibition presents a total of 31 early pieces as well as her most recent work, providing an opportunity for us to confront powerful works that speak directly to the dynamism of human life.
