Contemporary German art has claimed a singular territory for itself, marked by a troubled historical background steeped in very particular issues surrounding the second World War, the split between east and west Germany and subsequent reunification. Parts 1 and 2 comprise a retrospective examination of art shaped by such topics. Part 1 features the strong historical flavor and bold use of color of A.R. Penck, while Part 2 showcases artists and work widely considered to be central to the contemporary German art scene, like Gerhard Richter's abstract series and Norbert Bisky's pop-inspired paintings.
