Akiko Yamoto
Akiko Yamoto makes ceramic objects with unique forms that look like amalgamations of metallic industrial products and animal and plant forms such as shells and fossils. They are typically about 80cm in length, fitting nicely into the arms of one person, with a greenish copper rust tinge to them. In form however they resemble turbine-like feathers or elliptical whirling blades, or else fusions of comma-shaped jewels and animal skulls - in short, a strange configuration of antiquity and futurity.

The triangular-shaped parts that look like sharp teeth and radial lattices are all twisted and formed by hand, while the colors are achieved through a technique similar to corrosion. The polyhedral structure of Yamoto's sculptures recall both machine components and animal and plant fossils. She completed her studies in March 2008 at the graduate school of Osaka University of the Arts where she first studied ceramics, and currently continues to make work at Utatsuyama Kobo in Kanazawa.

This is Yamoto's first solo exhibition, featuring 6 pieces from her New Biotechnology series, as well as two new works.
