"Dawn of Spring" Exhibition

Yamatane Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Taikan Yokoyama, Shoen Uemura, Kokei Kobayashi, Yukihiko Yasuda et al.
As new buds appear on trees and the camellias and plum blossoms brave the cold of winter, spring arrives with its breath of new life. We take pleasure in presenting our spring exhibition; Dawn of Spring – Yokoyama Taikan, Uemura Shoen, Kobayashi Kokei, and Yasuda Yukihiko.

This exhibition features approximately 50 works drawn from the museum’s collections, all focusing on the traditional Nihonga themes of birds and flowers and auspicious subjects.

Yokoyama Taikan’s Imperial Palace and Mt. Fuji, Sacred Mountain, along with Yasuda Yukihiko’s Mt. Fuji present the magnificent form of Japan’s iconic mountain, while Kobayashi Kokei’s Pine, Bamboo and Plum Blossoms, along with Hayami Gyoshu’s Spring Deepens are awash with the scent of spring flowers. Takeuchi Seiho’s Cranes and Pictures of the Twelve Months: Sea Bream present traditionally auspicious subjects for the spring season. This year, 2008, is the Year of the Rat in the 12-year oriental astrological cycle, and we have included two works eminently suited for display in Rat Years, namely Watanabe Seitei’s Grapes, with its long sinuous brushstrokes, and Okamura Togyu’s The Year of the Rat. Takayama Tatsuo’s Listening to Spring Notes allows the viewer to hear spring’s arrival amidst a chillingly cold composition. Uemura Shoen’s painting Dress of Spring depicts a woman wearing an ornamental hairpin of cherry blossoms, and the entire painting exudes the gently warm feeling of spring. We hope visitors will enjoy these paintings and their anticipation of spring’s welcome arrival.
