AIT Slide Talk #23 presents "Contemporary New Zealand Art" with special guest curator Naoko Usuki.

AIT runs the Curator in Residence for young independent curators, sending them overseas for their study and research. This time, Usuki received funding from the Ishibashi Foundation and stayed in New Zealand for a month in spring 2008.

At this talk, Usuki will bring audiences up-to-date information on the New Zealand art scene, gathered during her visits to seven cities including Auckland, New Plymouth and Christchurch, meeting artists and collectors and visiting museums and galleries. New Zealand has established its own art scene unrestrained by the systems often seen in other Western societies. Contemporary New Zealand art emerged in the midst of globalization while maintaining its own unique culture and identity as part of Oceania.

The second part of this talk event will be joined by Roger McDonald of AIT, introducing the exhibition "Mediarena: Japanese Contemporary Art" held at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in 2004 in New Zealand, in which he participated as a curator. These two speakers will address similarities and differences between the New Zealand and Japanese art scenes, as well as their activities as independent curators.
