Matazo Kayama "Memories of Atelier"
This event has ended.
At Tama Art University
Media: Painting, Art Talk
Matazo Kayama (1927-2004) was the son of a Nishijin textile designer, and grew up surrounded by beautifully-colored patterns and drawings as a child. Early in his teenage years, Kayama had already revealed his talent. Yet he chose not to pursue a career as a Kyoto painter, which would have bound him to certain traditions. Instead, he chose to study at Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (the current Tokyo National University of the Arts). Growing up with a deep consciousness and understanding of the sublimity of the nihonga tradition in Kyoto, he craved new directions in the medium.
Aware of tradition and yet determined to pursue something new, Kayama attempted to visualize his own world. His practice was not limited to nihonga, but also copper printmaking, which some praise more than his painting, as well as lithography and woodblock printmaking, on which he collaborated with skilled printmakers.
This exhibition is divided into sections featuring decorative art, printmaking, ceramics and painting, exploring his creations from different angles. Sketches, drawings and various artifacts that are rarely shown in public are also on display, giving viewers a deeper understanding of his world.
