Photographer Toshio Shibata has been shooting landscapes for thirty years ever since his first solo exhibition in 1979. Works he has created as part of the "Typical Japan" series often depict dams, iron bridges and concrete embankments that are seen in remote areas of Japan. The contrast between utilitarian concrete and metal constructions and the misshapen mountains and rivers in the background captures the strange existential condition of such sites, where nature and the man-made coexist. He uses large format photography to meticulously depict the uniqueness and beauty of sculptural landscapes that evolved in response to the undulating geography of Japan. His flair for details, for which he has gained a considerable international reputation, is comparable to that of an artisan who is tirelessly devoted to high quality production.

This exhibition focuses on Shibata's contact prints, including works that have never yet been seen in public. Contact prints are created without a enlarger, by directly placing the negative on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light. Contact prints are typically used only for reviewing images.
