Yutaka Takanashi "Field Notes of Light"

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Yutaka Takanashi
The nearly fifty-year career of photographer Yutaka Takanashi (b. 1935) has centered on the city. He has changed cameras and methods of walking around the city, sometimes attempting to trace accumulations of time in a vertical manner. Shifting his methodology from piece to piece, Takanashi has created what might be called a "city-like" pile of works that itself has a multilayered structure. From the masterpieces Tokyoites (1966) and Town (1977) to more recent pieces, this show traces Takanashi's ongoing attempt to capture aspects of the urban experience in his photographs.
