Kazuhiko Washio "Far East Hotel"
This event has ended.
At Ginza Nikon Salon
Media: Photography
A simple lodge meant for foreign travelers in Tokyo's Taito ward, in a town that used to be called Yamaya. These portraits taken by Washio were all shot in this one hotel - portraits of travelers, lowly-paid laborers, vagabonds...this place took in those who were most easily uprooted and trifled with by changes in the times and in society. Now, the lodge welcomes foreign travelers who go back and forth unhurriedly between the enormous city of Tokyo and their small room at the lodge, spending and exchanging money for pleasure and diversion, gathering up little fragments of the city. Their tiny three-tatami mat room gradually becomes a part of themselves as the days pass. This room is a weightless space cut off both from their hometowns and the magnetic fields of Tokyo, a my-space that belongs to nowhere in particular, except to the ever-changing "floating world" of the hotel.
