Aki Yamamoto
Art Front Graphics organizes special exhibitions on a monthly basis based on an artist or theme.
The April exhibition features Aki Yamamoto's bright colors and striking silhouettes.
Landscapes and scenery we have seen and things we run up against tend to linger in the memory. When trying to recall these things, however, outlines and colors overlap, and we have only a dim, ill-defined sensation of that experience, as if trying to remember the contents of a dream. Yamamoto's work is an attempt to conjure that emotional state of half-recollection.
Colors in her work define and capture space, bury it, and trace the contours of things, overlapping and melting into each other. In her previous works, this overlapping color palette gave an impression of transparency, but more recent works see a shift towards a more clearly defined outline in her figures, perhaps reflecting a more conscious attention to light and shade. While shapes take on a sharp, crisp silhouette for themselves, they still intertwine and overlap the shadows of other objects. More than all of this, however, Yamamoto's work evinces a desire to transcend these local relations and create a conscious, single work out of these disparate components, while still betraying something of the playful spirit of a puzzle-maker.
