"Rouault, Matisse Correspondences" Exhibition

Georges Rouault, Henri Matisse
In 1982, Henri Matisse went to Paris to start his career as an artist. He was not officially accepted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris, but was admitted to the prestigious class of painter Gustave Moreau. This is where he first encountered Georges Rouault, whose talent was well acknowledged by Moreau. The two artists worked hard at the studio, cultivating their passion for art. After three years, Rouault left the studio but their friendship continued for the rest of their lives.
Recently, letters exchanged between Matisse and Rouault were found. Their writing uncovers their respectful friendship and mutual ideas about art. They developed distinctive styles, but similarities can be found in colors and themes they employed in their work. This exhibition presents works created by these two French masters, tracing their lifelong friendship.
