Ishibashi Kan'ichiro, who later succeeded the founder of the Ishibashi Foundation, Seijiro Ishibashi, as the foundation’s president in 1981, had acquired an early appreciation and love of 20th century art. In 1998, his personal collection of works by postwar contemporary artists such as Jean Fautrier, Jean Dubuffet, Zao Wou-ki, Ben Shahn and others were donated to the Ishibashi Foundation. The year 2007 marks the 10th year since the passing of Ishibashi Kanichiro and provides a fitting opportunity for an exhibition introducing the postwar art that he loved so much, as well as the subsequent modern and contemporary art that has been acquired in his spirit to expand and strengthen the Ishibashi Foundation collection in recent years. About 20 of the foundation’s recent acquisitions will be displayed for the first time, including Férnand Leger’s "Abstract Composition", Kandinsky’s "Two Lines", Kazuo Shiraga’s "White Fan", Masanari Murai’s "Persons" and also works by Imants Tillers and Kathleen Petyarre that appeared in the 2006 exhibition “Prism: Australian Contemporary Art” at the Bridgestone Museum of Art.
