Katrin Paul, a Tokyo-based German artist will present an installation at Youkobo Art Space, her second solo show there. The work presented is a continuation of her investigation into the behavior of "Black and Light", and shows a new series of her black photographs entitled "20070714_No4."
For "20070714_No4", Katrin Paul photographed a strong typhoon. These almost completely black photographs are created at night mainly using the light from lightning during the typhoon. At first glance, these black photographs may seem confusing since they don't seem to depict anything in particular. One could say that they are reminiscent of the solar system. But, upon further investigation, they reveal their real nature, being surprisingly colorful water drops set against the backdrop of a black night. These black photographs are accompanied by a light installation and work on paper. In all the works on display, what is profiled is not the spectacular, but rather the ordinary that is questioned in the slender margins between beauty, triviality and enmity.
