"Paris Passages: The Changing Faces of Paris in 19th Century Prints and Paintings" Exhibition

Artizon Museum
Finished
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, Paris underwent a series of expansions and alterations through the "grands travaux de Paris," a comprehensive redevelopment program directed by Hauts-de-Seine Governor Eugene Haussmann. City water and sewage systems were laid and street lights installed, and dimly-lit and unsanitary Paris was thereby transformed into the elegant city of today. Painters and printmakers such as Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Charles Meryon, Rodolphe Bresdin, and Constantin Guys roamed the city’s old "passages" (arcades) and newly-reborn streets, capturing fleeting moments of a changing city, each from his own distinctive, modernist perspective. Whether bourgeois or bohemian, these artists' wide range of interests were reflected in their work: some expressed feelings of nostalgia for the old Paris, while others discovered new themes and inspirations in the modernization of Paris.
