Iran has produced numerous world-renowned Persian poets since olden times.
These rich words spun out of lyrical rhythms have captured the hearts of many. Strains and verses from classic, well-known poems have often been woven into conversations as well.
A country so rich in poetic sentiment has also produced fascinating picture books and illustrations with a wealth and diversity of content inspired by anything from the details and minutiae of daily life to the mysticism of Islamic traditions. This poetic spirit lives in both the written word and the drawn image, giving birth to a textured, nuanced world of stories and legends.
Carrying on from the exhibition one and a half years ago, which introduced Japanese audiences to young Iranian picture book illustrators and ceramicists, this exhibition spotlights the picture books themselves.
A boom in the production of picture books was seen in Iran in the 1960s, when talented artists, authors and poets gathered, not to make translations of foreign picture books, but rather to begin working to create a native corpus of such works. Starting in the 70s, Iranian artists began to exhibit award-winning works at international competitions in cities like Bologna and Bratislava. In recent years, what has been particularly striking is the new work of younger Iranian illustrators, a trend that has contributed to a rising international appreciation
of the artistry of Iranian picture books.
