Started in 2006, this year sees the third installment of this package design exhibition at Gallery 5610, produced by art director Shinya Nakajima, who handled everything from the setting of the theme to the coordination with 10 package designers. This year's theme is a "low impact sustainable society," aimed at prompting discussion about new and alternative values for living.

This is a theme that has surfaced recently in debates about environmental problems - shouldn't all unnecessary packaging be done away with? This exhibition proposes a hypothetical society in which this change has occurred, and attempts to pose questions about the nature of happiness through the viewpoint of product packaging.

One product on display is "Nakajima Farm organic brown rice" - fictional of course, but bearing packaging that reflects a design process that addresses future possibilities of similar products emerging out of the market.

These 10 designers have each risen to the challenge posed by Nakajima, responding each in their own way. In addition to a display of the products in the venue, visitors may also learn about each designer's concept and read Nakajima's comments, hopefully prompting questions about the role that design can play in a contemporary context.
