One of the most significant children's book artists, Seizo Tajima, has original drawings on display.
Tajima was born in Sakai City in Osaka in 1940 and spent his early childhood in a mountain village in Kochi Prefecture where his father was from. This experience of growing up in countryside became the backbone of his artwork. While studying at Tama Art University, he printed his own book "Shibaten", receiving recognition from some critics. "Furuya no Mori" (1964), "Chikara Taro" (1969), and "Fukimanbuku" (1974) are some of the best known children's books by him, achieving profound expression.
Tajima is also highly concerned with environment problems. He lived a self-sufficient life in Hinode-cho in Nishitama-gun in Tokyo since 1969 until 1998. He has also established himself as a painter, participating in major group shows.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, he won a number of awards for his illustrated books. Since 1998, he has been living in Ito City, creating sculptures and installations using things found in nature. What lies beneath his diverse creations is his worship for natural living.
This exhibition presents around 230 original drawings and illustrations from Tajima's major books. His oil paintings are also on display, introducing his entire body of work.
