While suffering from schizophrenia, Yamazaki came to the realization that chaos was nothing but evil and that order was divine providence. When he realized that there was no evil which could face off against God, he managed to bring himself back onto his feet and recover from the illness.
While taking photographs of the ocean was part of a healing process for him to get back to reality, it actually had another significance. Where is the historical trajectory of human agency, often compared tothe flow of a river, headed for? Yamazaki was able to find an answer to this question while in the throes of his clinical condition. As most rivers eventually drain into the ocean, by analogy all human beings are also headed in the same direction, toward the positive, toward better things. Human currents flow into each other, gathering all sorts of values along the way, and one day will reach the ocean.
"What makes the currents more complicated is the stupidity of humans. Compared to them, time can solve everything." Such was Yamazaki's epiphany in the midst of shooting these 50 monochrome photographs that are on view.
